A lot of people like the idea of growing and developing themselves, but that’s it. They just like the idea but they don’t take action. I hear a lot of excuses like – I don’t have time, I have a family, I have to help at home. Listen, there are 24 hours in a day so let’s break this down.
The “Stress Test”
Every now and then I like to test my team’s leadership and put them through a “stress test.” Some people may not agree with my unconventional method but let me tell you, I get results. The idea is very similar to what Marine recruits go through during the hellish 13-week long boot camp. I should know, I went through it. The formula is simple:

I want to make sure my time is well spent and the information is being put to use. Fast forward 8 months later. John approached me about future leadership opportunities. We had a good discussion and I asked, “since we last met and I gave you feedback, what have you done to develop yourself outside of work?” John responded with a series of excuses as to why they couldn’t find time to develop themselves. Again, we sat down and I clearly outlined what they could be doing outside of work. My big thing is, don’t wait for an opportunity to present itself before beginning to work on yourself.
